‘Be Not Solitary, Be Not Idle’
2021 marks 400 years since the first publication of Robert Burton’s encyclopaedic masterpiece The Anatomy of Melancholy. Throughout the intervening period, its copious and digressive assembly of the causes, symptoms, and cures of melancholy has absorbed the attention of readers and invited them into the company of Burton’s satiric, social, and witty prose. Join Dr Angus Gowland (UCL), Dr Mary Ann Lund (Leicester), and Dr Kathryn Murphy (Oxford), authors and editors of recent and forthcoming works on Burton, for a round-table conversation and Q&A, on editing the Anatomy, Renaissance melancholy, Burton’s life and work, and 400 years of the busy, companionable activity of reading his perennially fascinating book.
