Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies Seventh Biennial Conference
Organisers: Prof. Emma Depledge, Dr Katrin Rupp, University of Neuchatel; Dr Rory Critten,

This conference will explore the afterlives of Medieval and Early Modern authors, texts, genres,
concepts, and material objects. It will thus engage with the fields of adaptation studies, book
history, conservation practices, intellectual history, and reception studies. We invite submissions
for 20-minute papers or pre-formed panels on all aspects of the conference theme. These may
include, but are not limited to:
- The posthumous fortunes of Medieval and Early Modern texts, authors, characters,
genres, concepts, material objects, and archives - Medieval and Early Modern afterlives in popular and contemporary culture, including
Early Modern Medievalism and Medieval Medievalism - Literary, theatrical, and screen adaptations of Medieval and Early Modern texts and
characters - The afterlives of classical texts, authors, and characters within Medieval and Early
Modern texts
Global Medieval studies, Gender-Focused, and Critical Race Theory are particularly welcome
approaches to these broad topics.
The conference will also include two workshops for doctoral students on the topics of ‘Early
Modern Afterlives: How to Conduct Film and Performance Analysis’ and ‘Researching and
Writing about the Post-Medieval Reception of Medieval Texts’.
Select papers presented at this conference will be edited by the conference organisers and
published as part of the Swiss Papers in English Language and Literature (SPELL) series in the
following year.
SAMEMES invites early career members to submit their first published monograph, written in
English, for the SAMEMES Book Prize (CHF1000). In order to enter the competition
