A Cultural History of Blood, 1400-1700

Blood flows through bodies, seeps outwards, transmits information across generations. Both as a product of bodies and as a symbol, blood has done significant work in the cultural imaginary. A Cultural History of Blood is designed to be published as part of the Bloomsbury Cultural History Series, in six illustrated volumes, each devoted to an examination of blood in one of six historical periods.

Expressions of interest are sought for chapters in the above volume, under the following headings (the headings are consistent across each volume of the series): Life, Family and Heredity; Law, Politics and Society; Physiologies of Blood; Pollution and Disease; Consuming Blood; Magic, Ritual and Belief; Bloodshed; Visualising Blood.

Each completed 10,000-word chapter (including references) would be due in December 2022. Informal expressions of interest or requests for more information should be sent to Sara Read, editor of this volume s.l.read@lboro.ac.uk
