Call for Abstracts:
We invite chapter proposals for the Routledge Companion to Early Modern Music and Literature. Following the forthcoming Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature (2021), this new volume will consider the intersections between music and literature of the period c.1300–c.1800. We welcome a variety of approaches to interrogating this relationship, and authors may consider (but are not limited to) the following themes:
- Representations of music in Early Modern literary works; representations of literature in Early Modern music
- Early modern opera and song: librettists, literary sources, reception in literary circles and in the public press
- Early modern theatre, aurality in performance practice, theories of rhetoric and declamation, debates surrounding versification
- Cross-disciplinary influence, aesthetic exchange, networks, intertextuality, and translation across literature and music
- Materiality, media, and mediation
- Intermedial form and/or reform
- Space and place, displacement, trans-national exchange
- Intermedial narratives of discovery, trade, absolutism, court culture, revolution, empire, conquest
- Print culture, publishing practices, and the circulation ofmusico-literary media
- Early Modern music in contemporary literature; Early Modern literature in contemporary music
Proposals on these and other topics are warmly invited. Contributions must address both literature and music and offer a synthesized discussion of their intersection.
Completed chapters must be c. 6,000 words and adhere to the MHRA bibliographic format. Completed chapters will be due in October 2022. Authors are welcome to discuss works in languages other than English, although quotations should be provided in translation. Authors are responsible for securing and funding any permissions required for quoted material, score excerpts, and images.
Abstracts will be assessed on their originality, the contribution they make to intermedial research, and their compatibility with the themes across the book’s chapters and subsections. We encourage submissions from scholars within Word and Music studies and from other related disciplines. We are happy to discuss topics with prospective authors ahead of submission.
Abstracts of 250 words should be submitted along with a 100-word author bio using the Online Form no later than Monday 15th November 2021. We will endeavour to let authors know the outcome by early December.
