Jesuits and Their Families

Event Date:
01 Nov 2018 to 04 Nov 2018

Albuquerque, New Mexico

We invite papers for the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference. The panel, “Jesuits and Their Families,” will be sponsored by the Journal of Jesuit Studies. The Constitutions of the Society of Jesus explicitly state that “everyone who enters the Society . . . should leave his father, mother, brother, sister, and whatever he had in the world.” And yet Jesuit correspondence and other sources provide abundant evidence that complete detachment was far from universal. The purpose of this panel is to consider the tensions between kinship bonds and the Jesuits’ apostolic charism. More generally, papers might address how Jesuit sources can contribute to debates about the affective character of the early modern family. Papers should be 20 minutes in length and presented in English.  Please send a title, short abstract (150- 300 words), and a short CV (no more than 2 pages) to Alison Weber: apw@virginia.edu by March 1, 2018.

Submission date for papers:
01 Mar 2018
